Last Week In Photography - Head Shot Session

Basic head shots photographed in the studio are mostly variations on a theme. For the most part the format is vertical and nothing fancy in the background to distract from the subject. It’s a different story for actors and models and also for those done outside so coming up with something a bit different is always a challenge.

This young woman needed a basic series of photographs for upcoming employment needs. It was a fun session.

Last Week In Photography - Another Summer Family Session In The Park

I was contacted through my Google listing by this family and after a rain delay we reset our session and were rewarded by a wonderful sunny day in a local park.

Photographing younger kids is always interesting as you catch them in those moments between their moments of zoomies! Older sis was a great help and the whole family came together for a great session.

Last Week In Photography - Photos For A New Business

The woman shown here is an amazing cook.. I know that because a few years ago I photographed some totally yummy food she prepared in my kitchen. A great shoot since we got to eat much of the subject matter!

She’s now running a cleaning service and needed some headshots and action photos so we photographed the headshots in the studio and then moved upstairs to show her in a work environment.

My home and studio are always clean for my own needs as well as having customers in… After this session it was cleaner :-)

Last Week In Photography - Senior Session

Another sunny summer morning found us in one of my favorite local locations, Ypsilanti’s Depot Town and Riverside Park.

It’s always fun photographing high school seniors as they get ready for the next step in life. This session with a great graduate to be was another confirmation of how much I enjoy what I do.

Last Week In Photography - Maternity Session

While carefully watching the weather I met this couple in a local park for a late afternoon session.

We were lucky to have periods of clearing overcast and made use of the sun to record this slice of time.

I also played around with a background change in Photoshop… not masterful but fun as you can see in the composite.

Last Week In Photography - Family Session

Blessed lately with mostly good weather this family took advantage of a sunny day to meet me in a local park to capture a slice in time with their two girls.

Nice day, nice family, nice session to share here.

Last Week In Photography - Long Planned Family Get Together

This extended family had not been in the same place at the same time for a while and the planned get together finally happened on a nice day in a lakeside park.

Photographing nine people, two of them youngsters, is a bit tricky but this went off without a hitch due to the great family dynamics.

Last Week In Photography - Horse People And A Construction Group

People who own horses are a breed unto themselves. It takes dedication and the commitment necessary to have a large animal be a part of your life. Boarding, medical care, feeding and the time spent emotionally supporting and bonding with an animal that large is a full time job.

Manny is a Percheron. Originally bred as war horses, Percherons today are often seen as draft horses and when standing next to Manny I’m always in awe as to his size. They’re generally 64 to 68 inches tall and often upwards of 2,000 pounds. It’s a good thing he’s a very gentle giant.

I’ve know Manny’s owners for years and have documented their relationship with him a number of times. He’s getting older and it was a beautiful day so we met to get another session done.

Later in the week I met with a construction group, one I’ve trusted with not only my kitchen remodel but with the huge job of restoring my studio after a massive flood when a storm caused a two foot sewage backup and the place was trashed.

We met at Riverside Park in Ypsilanti to photograph the business owner and his crew.

Last Week In Photography - Family Fun

Combine a beautiful early summer day with a family who loves to have fun and you get the recipe for a successful family session. We met at a local Ann Arbor park and laughed our way through the morning… great people, great session.

Last Week In Photography - Senior Session By The River, Head Shot Session In The Studio

We’d scheduled this day for a senior session and were watching the weather which cooperated splendidly.

Our setting was Ypsilanti’s Depot Town and Riverside Park, a favorite location and captured the culmination of this young woman’s High School experience.

Later in the week I had a visitor to my renovated studio for a head shot session. Fun session shown below.

Last Week In Photography - Family/Grad Session

This family was ready for a full session with everyone grouped as well as individual photos piggybacked with some photos of their daughter wearing her cap and gown.

We had fun and got the slice of time documented.

Last Week In Photography - Finally, Good Weather!

After a long, wet and dreary spring season the day was bright and warm for this family’s session at Ypsilanti’s Depot Town and Riverside Park.

The aim was to capture each member of the family as well as all of them together piggybacked with some senior photos for the young man, recently turned 18 and on the next step in his educational journey.

We utilized a number of locations within easy walking distance and it was mission accomplished.

Last Week In Photography - Senior Sessions

With senior sessions starting to be photographed I met with these two young women in the studio.

One just finishing high school and the other I had previously photographed for her bachelor’s degree, now documenting her master’s. We’re looking forward to the next step for both of them.

Last Week In Photography - A Long Overdue Website Overhaul

When I started this current iteration of my photography business the first step was acquiring my LLC license and initial equipment, a sizable investment.

The immediate next step was to develop a website to showcase my work. I had been asking friends to come in and pose for me in my living room as I still did not have a studio space so I had a fairly good selection of portraits and headshots as well as some examples of real estate listing photos to showcase.

I liked the navigation on the first site but never cared for the way mixed vertical and horizontal images displayed. Nothing I tried eliminated the clunky format and it finally became obvious a total new template was in order.

This past week has been an exercise in frustration finally culminating in a new version of my site incorporating a format displaying photos shown larger and tiled side by side in both formats, not scattered over the page in a haphazard patchwork.

I did have to give up the navigation in favor of a small three bar menu icon at the top left corner of the page.. no way to use the one I liked but a compromise I was forced to make in order to get the visuals I wanted.

I’ll rotate out the cover photo periodically.. currently it’s one I have on the site as well as for sale on my metal print site https://ssphotometalprint.com/

Thanks to everyone who has been along with and supportive of my efforts… greatly and humbly appreciated!

Last Week In Photography - More Product Added to The Metal Print Library

While plans are being implemented to add more dedicate graphic content to the Metal Print site I received some interest in these from previous posts so all are now available on the site.

Last Week In Photography - Added Metal Print Photos

Sliding ever so slowly into spring, business is picking up and while there’s still time I just added some more photographs to my metal print sales website. All of these are from archives and this year my mission is to add a number of images specifically aimed at large format prints. While these can also be custom ordered in standard surfaces as well as acrylic they are available in metal at the link directly below. Clicking on the link will take you from this site to the website.

Last Week In Photography - Head Shot Sessions

Two real estate agents, one experienced and one just starting out, came in for headshots.

At the start of the year the real estate market is shaping up to be as odd and interesting as 2021. While I am not an agent I am an affiliate member of the local board as a photographer and photograph a good number of real estate listings.

Self promotion is key and it was fun to assist agents at both ends of the career spectrum.

Last Week In Photography - Brothers

The year’s starting out with requests for studio sessions to escape our very cold days of late.

These brothers were in for portraits on a chilly Saturday morning the results of which are shown below.

Last Week In Photography - A Chance Meeting

I was photographing a senior session during the summer at Depot Town and Riverside Park in Ypsilanti, MI when I spotted this woman and her sister walking in the park.

I approached her later and asked if she would be interested in coming into my studio for a session. She agreed and came in a few weeks later with her brother (jokingly, her “bodyguard”).

Her naturally dramatic look combined with excellent makeup made for a great session.

Both she and her brother were delightful and were naturals in front of the camera.

Last Week In Photography - First Blog Of The Year

As we move into the new year it’s been most difficult maintaining connections.

Holiday parties have resulted in multiple viral infections even within my own circle of family and friends while many of us have put off visits to relatives in vulnerable age groups. The bright side is we still crave that closeness and find comfort in affirming family support.

I don’t want to start out negatively so am posting two of the family groups who visited me between Christmas and the New Year. My own family is spread across the country so being in the studio seeing the great interactions between these family members was a great way to celebrate the season.
