Last Week In Photography - Inside/Outside - Head Shot Session and Taking Advantage Of The Snowpocalypse

When my studio space opened I knew the usually slow winter months could be more filled by portraits and head shot sessions as potential clients in the Ypsilanti and Ann Arbor area had been contacting me for over a year asking for indoor services during the colder months.

Now that I've been able to assist with these needs activity has been picking up and this week I photographed a woman who's starting her nutrition counseling service. Great session and I look forward to seeing her succeed!

Also, I photographed a local student's senior photos a few months ago and we've been waiting for snow to do a session outside. She LOVES snow and cold weather so we finally connected in Ypsilanti's Candy Cane Park.

Last Week In Photography - Head Shot Session

Among other sessions, still in processing, these photographs are for a new real estate agent in the Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti area.

My studio space was not existent last year so having a large, workable area this winter has opened a full season for portraits, family photos and business head shots.

Here is a composite of a few from the day's shoot.

Last Week In Photography - On Site At A Home Based Business
Hunsberger composite (1280x853).jpg

Depending on the source one uses there are about 38 million home based businesses in the United States (including mine).

I was contacted to photograph the owner of a home based business specializing in organizing her clients' lives. She assists students, people with AD/HD, individuals, parents, couples with different organizing styles, kids, teachers and small business owners. The assignment was to photograph her in her work environment to illustrate her consulting style and work-space.

These photographs are a small portion of the over 70 finished images which can now be applied to her website.

Last Week In Photography - A New Year And New Faces

As anyone in The Ypsilanti and Ann Arbor area is only too painfully aware, we started the year with brutally low temperatures and a need to huddle under the covers and fantasize about sun and sand.

Two brave individuals fought the cold and came into my studio. One, a neighbor in my previous neighborhood who was updating his head shots. The other, a real estate agent customer of mine who was immensely helpful in being my model for some lighting tests.

The new year is starting well and as we progress I'll have more to share.

Last Week In Photography - Head shots, Four Legged Family Photos and a Fund Raiser

Last week I was able to photograph a neighbor and her fur family of four on one of the last warmish days of the year. Also I received a request for a head shot session and met a great guy needing to update his profile.

In addition there were company parties and this special event, the Annual Detroit Intermodal Association Toys for Tots fundraiser. I was, for the second year, privileged to be the official photographer for this great event.

Here's the venue and one of the bear tables.. sales of the bears alone raised thousands of dollars in addition to the prize raffles and donations.. a great evening for a worthy cause!

Last Week In Photography - A Couple Revisiting Ann Arbor, An Ann Arbor Family's Holiday Session

As we approach the holiday season I've been taking advantage of the last of the outdoor weather and got lucky twice for two sessions.

A engaged couple currently living in Austin, Texas has been getting photographed in cities they've visited or lived in across the country. Both are University of Michigan, Ann Arbor graduates and it was my pleasure to be contacted and engaged to photograph them as they wandered on campus.

Later in the week I met an Ann Arbor family to photograph them for their holiday cards... great weather once again and loads of fun with this family of six..father, mother, three kids and Bentley the furry one in these photos.

Last Week In Photography - Celebrating A Couple And Meeting A Newborn

Last week was a great week for photography! Not only did I get to spend one of the last good weather days of the year in a great setting with a wonderful couple but met a newborn I had photographed before he was born.

Beth and Lisa introduced me to the Highland Cemetery in Ypsilanti, a wonderful location with great history. It was a pleasure to accompany them as they educated me and celebrated each other!

Later in the week I met with Azadeh and Nathan, whom I had photographed while their now new son was still in the developmental stage...project completed.. He's a neat baby!

Last Week In Photography - At The End Of The Season A Great Family Session

As anyone in Michigan knows, this has been an odd fall season. The usually amazing colors that bless us as northerners just didn't show us their normal brilliance on a schedule we're used to.

As a result of the unpredictability those of us who love to photograph people in this season had to watch the weather reports more closely than usual and when a nice day popped up this great family and I made a day of it in a local park.

I have one or two more outdoor fall sessions and am so very glad this one went well!

Last Week In Photography - Events to Honor, Fundraisers, Families, Portraits and Real Estate

Last week was busy!

One event celebrating a lifetime of educational service, another to raise funds for House By The Side Of The Road.. a worthy service organization.

Two families took advantage of the waning warm weather in our local parks and another retreated to the warmth of my new studio when blustery weather cut an outdoor session short.

Finish that off with a real estate listing shoot.

Photoshop is my life!

Last Week In Photography - Head Shots And A Modeling Portfolio

When I built out my studio space I knew it would open a door that had been closed, particularly in Ypsilanti and Ann Arbor's winter season. By having a place to offer head shots, portraits and family sessions and not to be at the mercy of the weather has opened a world of new and exciting opportunities.

This past week I photographed a corporate head shot for an Audiologist, a rush headshot for an Air Force member in need of same day shoot and delivery for her next post in Texas and a session for a delightful young man.. a student at Eastern Michigan University in the Theater Arts program.

Last Week In Photography - Sunset In Saugatuck IV -

Those of you who know me are aware I make a yearly visit to visit my wife, Maureen's, ashes on the bluffs overlooking Oval Beach on Lake Michigan every September 13th.

I lost her to cancer in 2013. This would have been our 31st anniversary and we've been watching the sunset every year since her passing.

This year it was gray and overcast.. a good time to be introspective as the usually busy boat slips were deserted except for a few restaurant goers nearby.

The beach itself was empty of the crush of people leaving it to the gulls and one lone woman and her dogs. Sunset promised to be hidden but the clouds at the horizon cleared just in time for these images to be captured.

The quietness and loneliness of the beach gave me time to reflect on loss, that of my family and others who felt that hole in their lives at her passing.

Yet another reminder to us all to treasure what and who we have and remember we'd pay a lot to have back all those little things we used to think annoyed us.

Last Week In Photography - One Graduation, One Senior And A Great Historic Building

Another great week.

One young woman graduated from Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti and wanted some photographs on campus. Another is to be a senior at Community High School in Ann Arbor and we shot at a private location near the Huron River.

Then I was lucky enough to do the listing photos for this great downtown three story Ypsilanti building filled with wonderful history at 12 West Michigan Avenue.

More to come.

Last Week In Photography - Portraits, Head Shots, Automotive Product and the Newborn Baby Growing Up

This week was very busy.. a mixed blessing but one I'll gladly accept.

I got to photograph Lukas, now 17 months old whose seconds old being born photo was the hit of last year as well as a family together in my studio for a rare moment as they're disbursed over a vast geographic area. Also some head shots and business portraits and a visit to the trucking yard to back up a video crew with still photos for a soon to be launched product.

Last Week In Photography - Kids' Triathlon, Family Photos and More Real Estate

Hope Clinic is an outreach organization providing medical, dental, food and counseling services in the Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti area. I donated time for a family shoot to their fund raising auction and this week was pleased to photograph the family whose winning bid went to supporting the clinic. A few photos from that shoot are here.

Also I was pleased to have been able to donate photographic services to the Rutherford Pool Youth Triathlon, an annual event in Ypsilanti. Photos of that event are here as well.

During the week there were a few real estate listings to be done.. the market is strong.

More to come.

This Week In Photo Employment

I really like the way I never know from week to week what, where or who I'll be photographing. Here's a short collection from this past week including a head shot session, real estate listing in a great wine cellar, family session in a local Ann Arbor park and a few of the aforementioned "squirrel" in the studio and Candy Cane Park in Ypsilanti including a composite for her modeling agency.

Next week? More head shots, another real estate listing and I get to meet a new baby!

New Studio - Second Session - the Squirrel's Brothers

In last week's blog post I introduced Daniella The Squirrel, named as such due to her super high energy level and bouncy personality.

This week I had a visit from her twin brothers, Jordan and Dylan and their amazingly laid back cat, Tigger.

The guys just turned 14 and have an interesting history in front of the camera. Here are some credits from an e-mail their mother, Ryann, sent to me (more about her in an upcoming blog post).

1) "Baby Morgan" General Hospital (2003-2005)

(They played Sonny (the mobster) & Carly's baby boy. Morgan is now 25 or so on the show. Soap years aren't normal years!)

2) Wes Craven's, Red Eye, with Rachel McAdams

3) Desperate Housewives as Penny Scavo (2004); Lynne Scavo's child

4) Other odd & end ones like.. Frito Lay's Commercial for the 2004 Oscars, McDonald's Destiny's Child, ABC's What About Brian?

The shoot was a lot of fun, Tigger behaved and I'm learning my high key white background setup.

Here are some photos from the session.

Daniella The Squirrel... First Session In The New Studio !

Last week I posted about my new studio and how pleased I was to finally have a dedicated space in which to make a huge jump in the type of portrait work I want to offer.

I envisioned a sophisticated look.. a view into the hearts of my clients.. a sense of drama in the way I could portray the images of those in front of the camera... Finally, my first session in the new space.

And I got Daniella the squirrel.

Which is unfair to squirrels since they now have to live up to a new and grander scale of energy! Daniella bounced from one end of the room to another, from makeup mirror to studio floor to stool to upside down and was a force of nature not to be denied.

To say portrait "sitting" is not quite accurate and I wouldn't have traded it for the world.

Here, then is Daniella the squirrel, the princess, the force of nature!

A Bigger and Better Screwdriver - A Dream Realized

Given that a job is easiest accomplished with the right tools it's smart to buy the best you can.

Mechanics and other tradespeople know this from bitter experience. Nothing is as much fun as a five minute task stretching into a bruised knuckle, inventing words because you've used all the ones you know, hours long horror show.

Photographers are no different. The best camera and lens for the task at hand, the best lighting you can afford and a place to use it all makes the job go better, the result be what was envisioned and most important, a pleased client.

Since I started my business beginning in Ypsilanti and branching out to Ann Arbor and all the surrounding communities the one tool I was missing was a place to shoot in bad weather and the ability to offer a wider range of services.

Finally that dream has been realized and the work on my new studio space is finished.

It's been a huge investment in time, equipment and labor (thanks to my son and Duane our painter) but I'm officially open and eager to entertain clients offering a much more sophisticated menu of shooting options in portraits, head shots and product photography.

Here are some photos of the space. Sincerely hope to see you soon.
